Hiking in San Francisco

The San Francisco Bay area is a world-class urban city surrounded by the beautiful natural landscape of northern California. Beaches, bays, grasslands, and giant coastal forests abound throughout the region. Much of this open space is set aside as regional and national parks or preserves and offers abundant hiking trails.

Where to Hike

Land's End

Hiking at Land’s End is a “must do” activity for anyone visiting San Francisco or even those who live in the Bay Area. Take the time to visit this beautiful natural area right outside downtown San Francisco and enjoy the views of the Golden Gate bridge while hiking the Coastal Trail. The Coastal Trail is the main trail at Land’s End and it can draw quite a crowd. If you’re in search of a quiet nature experience, it’s best to go early in the day.

Marin Headlands

The Marin Headlands is the hilly peninsula to the north of the Golden Gate Bridge. This is where you’ll find the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. One of the biggest attractions in this area is hiking through Muir Woods, an ancient grove of coastal redwood trees. The forest has been federally protected since 1908, keeping these incredible giant trees alive. There are dozens of hiking trails in the Marin Headlands, making it easy to find a good hike for your group, no matter your interests or skill level.

Point Reyes National Seashore

The Point Reyes peninsula is a unique natural area to the north of San Francisco and a destination worth driving to for the chance to enjoy the hiking trails and beaches. The entire peninsula is preserved as the Point Reyes National Seashore, a unit of the National Park Service. Point Reyes National Seashore is more than a beach, the terrain boasts craggy sea cliffs, rolling hills, lagoons, lakes, estuaries, waterfalls, and creeks all home to a wide range of animal life. Enjoy a hike on one of the park’s trails and keep your eyes peeled for endangered tule elk, shorebirds, bobcats and more.
