Kayaking in Arizona

COVID-19 Updates: We have made some modifications to our guided tours and rentals to keep our guides and participants safe and healthy. Find out more.

Kayaking is a great way to get out and enjoy the lakes, rivers, and waterways near you. Kayaks come in one or two person styles, and can be hard-shelled or inflatable. When exploring on a lake or river, kayaks can move in shallow water among plants and allow for good wildlife viewing or even swimming. Kayaking is different than canoeing because you sit lower down in the bottom of the boat right at the water level, this often makes it easier to get in and out of your kayak for a quick swim. Kayaks are typically more aerodynamic and can move faster through the water than canoes. Some people are more familiar with ocean kayaks which are very long and narrow, but kayaks can come in various lengths and widths.

REI offers guided kayak tours and kayak rentals near the Phoenix metro area. On all of our guided kayak tours we use inflatable “self-bailing” river kayaks. This means they are designed so that water gets into the bottom of the boat through holes that are meant to be there and you are likely to get wet while sitting in your kayak. This adds an extra level of refreshment on hot desert days!
