Stretch your legs while riding a whole lot of trail through some of the most recommended mountain biking trail systems in the Scottsdale/Phoenix metro area. This mountain bike shuttle from REI makes it possible to piece together the best of the trails that surround the McDowell Mountains including part of the Maricopa trail, the Brown’s Ranch trails, and the trails at McDowell Mountain Regional Park. This shuttle is not a typical “downhillers only” route of technical descents and long-travel bikes. It’s the perfect solution for a day of endurance and net elevation loss that provides fun and exhilaration all day long.

Sweeping views and winding desert single track guide your way through giant saguaro cactus as you carve around the edge of the McDowell Mountains in Scottsdale. From the national forest, to Scottsdale’s desert preserve, and finally through one of the beloved Maricopa County regional parks, this tour highlights some of the best mountain biking areas in the valley. Enjoy the sunshine, the descents, and minimal climbing on a fully supported shuttle from the REI Adventure Center in Arizona.

Mountain bike tour group on Arizona desert trail

Meet us at the trailhead and we’ll load your bikes on our Huckwagon, you’ll grab a seat in our Transit shuttle van, and we’ll drive to the Maricopa Trail where it crosses Bartlett Dam Road in the Tonto National Forest. Your shuttle driver will review the route options with you on the map before you begin your ride. You will take the Maricopa Trail south, and in a few miles you’ll enter the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, where there are dozens of well-signed trails to explore as you continue downslope. Your shuttle driver will meet you at Frasefield trailhead to load you up with snacks, replenish your water, and make sure you’re ready for the next stage of your ride. From the Fraesfield trailhead, you will cross Rio Verde Road and continue towards the McDowell Mountains, entering McDowell Mountain Regional Park to catch the Pemberton Trail to continue your adventure back to your vehicle at the Four Peaks lot. While there are a number of route options, all will entail at least 21 miles of riding with a net elevation loss.
