This kayak tour on Canyon Lake, located in the heart of the Tonto National Forest, combines the serenity of lake paddling with the dramatic scenery of the jagged Superstition Mountains to the south and Arizona’s iconic and austere Four Peaks towering to the north. Expect calm waters, wildlife, stories of the area’s history, waterfront lunch, and much more on REI’s guided tour of beautiful Canyon Lake. The lake is formed by one of five dams on the Salt River; it sits upstream of Saguaro Lake and downstream of Apache and Roosevelt Lakes. Each of these provide ample opportunity for recreation and incredible scenery. The Salt River has always been important to the people who’ve made their homes in central Arizona’s lower Sonoran Desert. It was the lifeblood of early indigenous inhabitants who carved irrigation canals for agriculture and found ways to thrive in the desert landscapes. Today, these reservoirs build on that legacy and make it possible for metro Phoenix to grow and thrive. Enjoy a full day kayak tour in this dramatic setting and pause to appreciate the beauty of the canyons and the importance this river system.
